What is this thing called "Branding"?

The # 1 question I've been receiving lately is, what is branding?

And the second is, why would I need that?

My answer?

Good question.

Let's jump in. 

Branding is so much more than a logo. Branding is a story, that is consistent, that pulls you in, that makes you stand out. Branding is surprisingly more about the intangibles than it is about the tangibles. I know that might sound confusing, but I'll elaborate in just a sec. When you have a brand, you're basically establishing an identity that shows you mean business. Having a brand makes you "2 legit 2 quit", but I'm actually for serious... Having a brand makes others take you seriously. That's why you need one.

So let's start with the basics:

Can you tell me what brand this is?

Do you see a prominent logo on either of these images? But do you still know which brands these are? How? How do you know the company without the logo?

Answer: The intangibles.

I'd love to know what stands out to you first, but the first things that stand out to me in each image are the colors. Orange and Green. Second, I dissect it down further by seeing the first image has hammers and the second coffee. By just these simple deductions, I know that Brand 1 is Home Depot and Brand 2 is Starbucks. 

This, my friends, is Branding. Branding at some of it's best! Without uttering a word, or showing a logo you know what company you're looking at just by the intangibles. 

But here's the kicker, and the most important step to determining a brand.

This is the secret to branding....are you ready??



You have to have a plan. A blueprint if you will. And then... you have to stick to it. To establish a brand is actually a lot of hard work. It requires consistency and sticking to the brand map you've laid out of your company/self. It takes TIME to develop and intentionality to deliver.
